I really think, that the EU should open the visa wall. When young Belorussian get the chance to see the EU, this will further cultural and social transition and probably the real idea of democracy. When the EU tries to further change in Belarus, she will not succeed through economic pressure, but even more with transparency and open borders. Only this will decline the presidents support.

Do you know that if you are using Firefox you can download a 'dislike-button' for Facebook? I seldom use it because if people use Facebook in another browser it looks like I commented with some weird link...
But phew, there is a lot to dislike right now!

Tim, I highly recommend you this article by Julia Chernyavskaya:
http://www.index.org.ru/journal/15/15-chern.html
Easy and interesting reading. The author explores the topic of belarussian identity - just what you asked for.
She also wrote a book "Белорусы: от "тутуэйших" к нации". Check its short content here:

[...] 2009 and 2010 brought GenerationBY a lot of valuable contacts both in Belarus and abroad. Most of these contacts resulted in good friendship and some of them – in successful projects (more details to come!). We are trying to use every opportunity to get to know people like you and spread the word. This year GenerationBY is accredited to cover Sziget festival in Budapest (August 10-16); and since there is a fairly big chance that we can meet you there we will keep our eyes open not to miss you in the crowd :) But just to be on the safe side – if you want to meet – send us an email in advance!
