Last three months of the year was an uneasy time for Hanna and Lyavon Volski, a famous artistic family, who spent this time working and organizing other people to work on a unique project called “Snowy alley, 8”. There is a new trend in Belarusian political scandals. Mainly, the news of expelled students are followed by the news of them winning courts or being reinstated at universities. At the beginning of December there were two main student disputes against their universities, both ending in a more or less positively way.
We already wrote about Zmicier Zhalieznichenka, who got expelled from Homel State University (HSU) for being arrested due to his political activities. After his claim to the Homel city court about unlawful activities of HSU was declined, he continued his struggle and sent a claim to the next level of the Belarusian court system. Continue reading…
According to the Belarusian Constitution everyone has the right to free education. According to this statement everyone has the right to take entrance exams to enter university, and those with best results can enjoy a free education without tuition fees. However, it is not correct to say that education is free because the state demands payback in form of labor after graduation. This practice is called “compulsory employment”, when after the graduation those who studied without having to pay have to work for two years at the place where the university (state) assigns them. This is an old soviet practice which was reintroduced in Belarus at the end of 90s.
